 Shoe Factory Apartments
former Weyenberg Shoe Warehouse
Beaver Dam, Wisconsin
Project Description: Until recently, this building housed a shoe company's warehousing operation, in a section of Beaver Dam that has become largely residential. Stonehouse Development of Madison, engaged the Miller Architectural Group to aid them in a program of conversion to market rate apartments, with full utilization of historic renovation and moderate income housing tax credits.
The design preserves the industrial character of the building with exposed structure and mechanicals in 50 large, open plan apartments. The exterior of the building was cleaned and tuck-pointed, it also received a new roof and new aluminum replacement windows throughout. Some of the building's industrial machinery has even been preserved as objets d'art in the building's lobby. The building boasts a new elevator and other updated mechanical equipment, with all units pre-wired not only for cable TV, but broadband Internet access.
