Urban Design Award
Miller Architectural Group and the Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation have received recognition for the King Drive Commons project.

The project is one of twenty recipients of the Milwaukee Mayor’s Urban Design Award in recognition of the project’s design and contribution to Milwaukee’s urban environment.

During the course of designing the project, Brian Miller encouraged the owners to consider a more contemporary, forward-looking aesthetic in place of a more conservative, traditional aesthetic. The building, occupying a prominent place in the rapidly redeveloping King Drive neighborhood, presents a street friendly and jazzy facade to a busy urban environment. The building presents high quality affordable apartments and commercial space in a modern package that has more in common with many of the high end condominiums being built in the city, than moderately priced residential units.

Bob Greenstreet, City Planner and Dean of the UW-Milwaukee School of Architecture, remarked on the high quality of candidates for this years awards. “We’ve never had so much difficulty in deciding which projects stood out from the others. We feel that all of the projects we considered are exceptional.”

The associates at Miller Architectural Group are not only proud to have received this recognition, but also that the project filled up with tenants in record time, and is already a thriving focus of the renaissance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, one of the most prominent historical districts in the city.
