Amity Loft Apartments
West Bend, Wisconsin

Project Description: The Amity Leather Company in West Bend ceased operations in 1996. After the City operated the building as a business incubator for a couple of years, it was turned over to Stonehouse Development for renovation.

Miller Architectural Group prepared development plans to convert the building to apartments. Similar to the previous project with Stonehouse, the Shoe Factory Apartments, the building was to be financed using moderate income and historic preservation tax credits.

The building, whose tower is a notable feature of the along one of the primary avenues of this small community, was designed with 37 apartments ranging from studio lofts to multi level, two bedroom units. The huge factory windows were replaced with new 10' by 16' energy efficient windows, flooding the units with light. The building's tower houses the living room of one of the more dramatic units, with a master bedroom suite above, featuring windows on all four sides of the suite.

The lowest level includes a parking space for each of the units, to help maintain the manicured lawns and landscaping of the facility. This unique and desirable housing project exceeded the success of the previous project by fully leasing before construction was finished.
